Suicide Prevention Efforts
The Department of Military Affairs and Veterans Services, in partnership with the New Hampshire National Guard, the NH Suicide Prevention Council, other NH State Departments and community providers throughout the state have committed to preventing suicide among Service Members, Veterans and their families.
Nationally:

- 2018 to 2020, age- and sex-adjusted suicide rates for Veterans fell by 9.7%.
- 2020, the rate for Veterans was 57.3% higher than of non-Veteran adults.
- 2020, suicide was 13th leading cause of death among Veterans overall – and was the 2nd leading cause of death Veterans under 45.
New Hampshire:
- Suicide 2nd leading cause of death for ages 15-34
- 9th leading cause of death overall*
- After accounting for age differences, the Veteran suicide rate in New Hampshire was “significantly higher than the national Veteran suicide rate and significantly higher than the national general population rate”**
NH Suicide Prevention Programs… The statewide Suicide Prevention Council and specifically the Military and Veterans Committee are working with key stakeholders to implement:
The New NH Suicide Prevention website which went live in conjunction with the Governor’s proclamation on 8 September and to adapt the website to meet the needs of Service Members and Veterans.
Suicide Prevention Council’s Military and Veterans Committee collaboration with Veteran Focus @ NH 988 Coalition are beginning initial collaboration on addressing Veterans and Service Member's needs.
A range of suicide prevention training, including “ASIST” (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), an in-depth suicide prevention training as well as “Connect Online”, a 3-module, self-paced, online suicide prevention training designed and offered by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) New Hampshire. Training engagements by the New Hampshire National Guard across the state. A collaborative exploration is ongoing with respect to outreach across the state beginning with VFWs with suicide prevention trainer the trainer and building beyond the VFW to American Legion and others…
The recent Annual NH Suicide Prevention Conference was held on November 2nd at the Grappone Conference Center in Concord. The conference focused on bringing individuals, businesses, education, public health, mental health, and caregivers together to share, learn and expand the development of suicide prevention efforts, support for survivors of suicide loss, and attempt survivors.
NH Suicide Prevention Week.
Governor Sununu recently signed a proclamation declaring a Suicide Prevention Week in concert with the national Suicide Prevention Month citing:
Hundreds of people, including our veterans are offered hope and compassion each day by calling the Veteran's Crisis Line/988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Plan serves as a blueprint to guide suicide prevention efforts in New Hampshire led by the legislatively established New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Council, and the Youth Suicide Prevention Assembly; and New Hampshire has taken important steps in preparation for the transition to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline strengthening the state's long standing Lifeline center, adding a secondary lifeline center, implementing NH Rapid Response which includes statewide mobile crisis response, increasing mental health training for first responders, and building a peer workforce, along with other priority items of the 10-year Mental Health Plan, which will reduce emergency department boarding and increase timely access to mental health treatment; and suicide is an important public health issue which is often preventable, and community members can help prevention efforts by reaching out to individuals who might be struggling, letting them know you care, offering hope, and connecting them with help
Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans and Their Families
In 2018, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) partnered to advance the strategic implementation of suicide prevention policies and practices for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF). New Hampshire was selected as 1 of 7 states to participate in the Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans and Their Families. Between November 2018 – July 2019, a multi-disciplinary team of 30+ professionals, Service Members and Veterans worked to create a strategic plan for New Hampshire that included best-practices outlined by the VA’s National Strategy for Preventing Veterans Suicide.
In order to ensure sustainability of the work started by the Governor’s Challenge team, the team and its work was absorbed into the NH Suicide Prevention Council beginning in August 2019. The SMVF TA Center funded by SAMHSA and the VA to administer the Governor's Challenge efforts continue to support the Governor's Challenge team efforts in New Hampshire on a monthly basis through free professional development opportunities, opportunities to collaborate with other state teams, consults with subject matter experts, professional facilitation services, conferences and workshops, and other technical assistance.
NH Suicide Prevention Council
As per NH RSA 126-R, the New Hampshire Council on Suicide Prevention (SPC) is charged with the oversight of the implementation of a New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Plan. The most recent available is the 2021-2024 New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Plan. The New Hampshire Suicide Prevention Plan Addendum outlines how the 2021-2024 plan was developed. The purpose of the Council is to ensure the continued effectiveness of the plan by evaluating its implementation, producing progress reports, and recommending program changes, initiatives, funding opportunities, and new priorities to update the plan. The Council also releases an Annual Suicide Report.
The NH Suicide Prevention Council holds meetings that are open to the public 6x/year. Currently, due to COVID-19, all meetings are held virtually. The Council consists of the following committees: Communication, Data Collection & Analysis, First Responders (formerly Law Enforcement), Military & Veterans, Public Policy and Survivors of Suicide Loss.
